A Short Introduction of Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

 

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is a techniques used to increase the visibility of website in a Search engine result page (SERP).

                                

Why we use SEO?

SEO helps the website to rank better in the result page. A better ranking website gets more traffic, creating the opportunity of better exposure and revenue.

 

What are Search Engines?

SEO completely depends on search engines. It’s a software designed to search the information on the world wide web (WWW).

Google, Yahoo, Bing, Baidu, Ask, AOL Search, WOW, Web crawler, My web search, Infospace, Info, Dogpile, DuckDuckgo, Blekko & Contenko are name of some search engines.

 Google is the top search engine & it’s used by (70-80)% people around the world. Rest (30-20)% use the other search engines.

                                  


Working of Search Engines?

The Search engines has 2 major functions: Crawling & Indexing.

The search engine use programs called Crawlers or Spiders to read the source code of the website & store this data on the local servers. This technique is called Crawling of the website. A website is crawled 3 to 4 times in a year.

After this Indexer take the data from the local server of crawlers and arrange them in categories like hotels, hospitals, schools, restaurant etc. This indexed data is stored in main database. The rank algorithm is a program that ranks the website according the website data.

Now, when a user type’s a query in search engines, the search engines matches the keywords in their database and present the website containing the keywords according to the rank assigned by the rank algorithm.

 

Type’s of SEO?

SEO is divided in to 3 categories:

 

White Hat SEO?

White hat SEO means, It is optimizing the website according to Search Engine Guidelines.

It is also considered as Ethical or Organic SEO.

The technique used of On page SEO & Off Page SEO.

This technique is accepted by the search engines.

Risk of getting banned by the search engine is very for the website using white hat

Websites using white hat SEO can expect steady, gradual, and long lasting effects.

 


Black Hat SEO?

Black Hat SEO exploits the guidelines search engines & use foul methods to increase page ranking.

It is also considered as Unethical SEO.

Link Spam, Keyword stuffing, cloaking, Hidden links & text are some of the Black Hat SEO techniques.

The techniques used under Black Hat SEO are against the guidelines of the search engine & are hence banned or black listed by them.

The website using Black Hat SEO experience a quick increasing in ranking but this change is unpredictable & has short lasting efforts.

 

Gray Hat SEO?

Gray Hat SEO is the SEO which takes risks i.e using technique that may borderline Black Hat SEO.

Gray Hat SEO techniques can be legitimate in some cases & illegitimate in others.

Doorway pages, Gateway pages, Duplicate content are some of the Gray Hat SEO.

 

Important types of SEO?

Based on the working activities, there are 2 types of SEO:

On-Page SEO refers to modifications and enhancements made on the landing page.

Off-page SEO consists of link building activities in accordance with relevant content on various platforms.


Keywords:

“Keyword is the term entered by the user to find the information in search engine”.  These keyword may be single words or long tail keywords. Keywords may vary based on:

The website no. of pages, quality & type of content etc.

The objective of website – to promote brand, deliver info, sales etc.

The target audience.

The Industry and the competition.

 

Keyword Research?

“Keyword Research is important as it gives the details about the keyword and used by the visitors and to target on those keywords”.



The steps to follow when doing keyword research:

Start with seed keywords – The general keywords that define your niche.

Form long tail keywords of your niche – The long tail keywords are specific and provide have a greater chance at being discovered.

Generate keywords – Put yourself in the searchers place and try to think what keywords they would use when searching.

Study the competitor’s website – Search for the keywords to know who the competitors are. Now study that website to find what keywords they are targeting. But keep in mind, that some of them may be using Black Hat Techniques, So only study the competitors, note down the keywords on which they rank on top but do not copy their content.

 Analysis of client site (one’s own site) is also done to check the keywords that have been already used.

Now that you have a list of keywords, You will check which keywords are the most searched & what is the competition level for them.
